Montana State University-Billings and Rocky Mountain College offer a full range of degree programs. There are private schools in Billings including religious-affiliated institutions. The College of Technology provides technical and occupation-specific programs responsive to employer and community needs. State funded Workforce Training programs are available.

Montana students consistently score among the highest in the nation on standardized college entrance exams. The "Smartest State Award" survey ranks Montana ninth based on factors that influence the education quality and level of the residents of each state.
