- With the largest coal reserves in the nation, eastern Montana is actively pursuing development of coal-to-liquid technology into synthetic gasoline and other fuels. There is also a palladium mine, the only place in the USA where the mineral used in catalytic converters is found. The Billings area has a history of oil production. The airport, five minutes from the central business district, is served by six major airlines offering daily direct flights. Charter service, air, motor and rail freight lines link services directly to the major hubs of Seattle to Chicago and NY, and to Denver, Salt Lake and Calgary.
